Transfăgărășan in Autumn (Romania)

Transfăgărășan is one of Romanias best and most famous roads to drive. If you did not know Transfăgărășan before, after the episode of Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson declared it the "world greatest driving road" you probably did.

The north side is the most interesting part of the road and I would recommend driving the road from north to south.

These photos are taking on the north side of the tunnel.

On the top is a tunnel that connects the northern part with the southern part. There are many (souvenir and food) shops and there is paid parking for cars. As a motorcyclists you can maybe avoid paying a few Romanian Lei for parking.

Be aware: the tunnel is closed in the winter period. The winter period is a long time for Transfăgărășan. The road usually closes the end of October and opens the mid/end of June. You can check on: https://www.transfagarasan.info

The south side is less interesting but still worth the ride. The asphalt quality is not as good as the north side and the views are less spectacular. The south side is a long twisty road through the forests whereas the north side is short, steep and with unblocked views.

If you don't have much time, only drive the northern part and then drive back. If you have more time, drive the whole Transfăgărășan and combine it with the Transalpina.

The following photos are from the south side.
